Lake Maracaibo is one of the largest navigable bodies of water in South America and hosts some of Venezuela's most important oil fields. The lake's port system includes multiple crude oil export terminals, offshore anchorage points, and petrochemical complexes that form one of the most active zones of the national oil industry. Vessels operating on the lake must navigate under the emblematic Bridge Over Lake Maracaibo, an engineering work that imposes height restrictions and requires specialized maneuvers.

The unique characteristics of Lake Maracaibo present specific operational challenges: variable drafts depending on the season, prevailing currents, trade winds, and a diversity of terminals ranging from monobuoys to conventional docks.
